I think that illustration above is a great teaching tool to teach people how to summarize. I remember in school when teachers were trying to teach us to summarize and they were stumbling through a whole explanation that most people didn't understand. I got lucky and have a writer for a father so most of the writing things in school were pretty well done with his help. I really like how that illustration easily shows the "filtering" of what is not as important to what is necessary in a summary.
