Section C- Recreation

General objectives of the section:

Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of:

1.

The scientific concepts , principals and skills involved in recreational activities;

2.

The scientific concepts, principals and skills involved in the handling of equipment;

3. The positive and negative aspects of leisure and recreational activities as regards the well-being of the individual and of the society;
4. The basic principals and functioning of audio visual aids used during leisure.

UNIT II: SPORTS IN AIR/WATER

Specific Objectives

Students should be able to:

Explanatory notes
Suggested Practical Activities

State the conditions for floatation in terms of up thrust and density;

Achimeds’ principle; the problems of shipping in different types of water; the Plimsol line on boats and ships.

Identify water safety devices

Life rafts and jackets, inflatable tubes.

3

Discuss the hazards associated with scuba diving;

Respiratory problems; damage to membrane due to high pressure.

4

Discuss the factors affecting the free movement of objects in air and water. Resistance to (friction/viscosity), streamlining, speed and direction of wind and water currents on sailing, kite flying, running and cycling.

Determine the angle at which a projectile must be  thrown to obtain maximum range and describe the procedure; construct simple catapults; apply this knowledge to sports involving throwing e.g. javelin, discus.
