Caribexam tutorial: English A Writing a summary

What is a Summary?

A summary is a brief restatement--in your own words--of the contents of a passage.

Why do we need to make summaries?

Sometimes someone may ask us to tell them what a movie or a class was about. At that point, they don’t expect us to tell them every word that was said in the movie or every word that the teacher said. Instead, they expect us to give them the main plot of the movie or the main topic of the class and the major points of interest that help us to understand what happened in the movie or the class.

In the same way, a summary is the way in which we are asked questions such as,|

“what was the movie about?”

“how did the game go?” and

“what did I miss in class today?”

you must be able to summarize.

Your questioner doesn't want to know every word and action in the movie, every play in the game, or every word from class;the questioner is asking you to select the most important details and summarize them.

Similarly, when you summarize a reading you need to be able to find the important data and then present it as clearly and concisely as possible.

Hello,

Yes, you are allowed to register as a private candidate for any CXC CSEC exam. You are also allowed to teach yourself or take private classes if you want.

For the coming exams in May/June 2011 however, I believe the registration period is closed. You can make sure by checking with your local Ministry of Education.

Preparing for 2012 is a good idea, you are giving yourself enough time to prepare.

For Social Studies, there are some good textbooks like, "Social Studies Essentials" by Sandy and Grayson, "Social Studies for the Caribbean (CXC Core units and options)" by Beddoe and others and "Modules in Social Studies - with SBA guide and CXC questions by Ramsawak and Umraw.

It would a good idea as well to get a copy of the syllabus, check out some past paper questions on www.cxcpastpapers.com and look at the CXC school reports for Social Studies to see what they are saying about candidates' answers on the exam.

I think those are good places to start.

Good luck with your exam prep. Hope you pass your exams.

Thanks, i'm really hoping i pass them its been years since i did a C.X.C exam or any exam. I will be teaching myself both English and Social Studies. Can you please tell me,

Where can i get the syllabus for those subjects?

Will the syllabus be the same for 2012 exams?

How often do they change the syllabus?

Well with regard to the CXC CSEC English A syllabus, the English exam guide we have here is very thorough and based on the syllabus. So you don't have to go anywhere else for that. You should check it out.

The CXC CSEC English A exam is revised for the 2012 exam, but the changes are not big and we will update our English guide before then.

The syllabus for the CXC CSEC Social Studies exam should be available in local bookstores where you are. If not, then you can go to the www.ianrandlepublishers.com website and order it online.

I am not sure but I think there are small changes to the Social Studies syllabus for 2012. There is no set timetable for syllabus changes in CXC as far as I am aware.

Finally, as a private candidate, you will be required to sit a paper 3 for the Social Studies exam instead of submitting a School Based Assessment (SBA). We do have a sample of that Social Studies paper 3 exam here. You can use this sample to familiarize yourself with the format of the exam.

We also have a link to some Social Studies multiple choice questions - similar to the kinds of questions that appear on paper 1 of the Social Studies exam.

Hopefully you will find these resources help you in preparing for your exams. Keep practicing your writing, READ the newspapers daily to broaden your outlook and set a timetable to work on your subjects for an hour or two each day.

You should be fine. And you can always check back here for advice if you need it.

Good luck! And keep in touch.

its not REALLY HARD and like every year they change the syllabus and i wish you the best will keep in touch.

P.S.
I will be revising the attachment for the Social Studies paper 3 exam in the next few days. I strongly recommend that you check back for the revised files.
