General objectives of the section:

Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of:

1.

The scientific concepts , principals and skills involved in recreational activities;

2.

The scientific concepts, principals and skills involved in the handling of equipment;

3. The positive and negative aspects of leisure and recreational activities as regards the well-being of the individual and of the society;
4. The basic principals and functioning of audio visual aids used during leisure.

UNIT I- SPORT AND BODY FUNCTIONS

Students should be able to:

Discuss the physiological effects of exercise

Strengthening of muscles, effect on circulatory and respiratory system, balancing energy intake and output

Discuss dietary needs for specific activities and the timing of meals prior to physical activities

Discuss the effects of drugs and other techniques used in performance enhancement of athletes

Blood boosting to increase the number of red blood cells; use of hormones (steroids); diet and training programs

* discuss the ethics of using drugs and other methods to alter performance

*discuss the physiological effects of exposure to sun;

6 Discuss factors to be considered in selecting recreational activities The effects of age, sex and diet on health
