Global Food price increase

Reasons causing an unprecedented increase of food prices globally
According to research statistics, the overall food prices globally have unprecedentedly increased to some 83% more over the past year and a half. Many around the world have felt the squeeze in their pockets to provide for their family. What causes this price increases you may say. There are three major factors which are responsible for this. These are outlined below.
Global Warming
Global warning is the factored in number one cause of food prices sky rocketing. Global warming causes unfavourable weather patterns creating an atmosphere which hampers the growth of crops as well as livestock. Such weather conditions experienced are intense and lasting droughts as well as extreme rainfalls which render crops and livestock incapable to survive.
Bio-fuel production
An alternative form used instead of crude oil which is environmentally friendly is bio-fuel. Many countries have started this initiative. However, there’s an increasing demand of this fuel particularly in America and Europe which leads to deforestation and YES, you guess correctly, food shortages according to Wikipedia. Since food supplies are utilized to assist in bio-fuel, it is transparent that food prices increasing are inevitable.
Rising oil prices
Oil prices are now booming to a climax as it has never been. For the last few months, the price of a barrel of oil has increased to about 16% more according to BBC World News and CNN News. There are speculations that another 100% more will be added in few years to come. Furthermore, it seems as everyday cents are added to the price of a barrel of oil. As a matter of fact, every manufacturing and production enterprises needs energy carry out their jobs. Since oil is a primary substance of energy creation, products produced are liable to increase. Farmers need fertilizers, feeds, etc. Evidently, there will be an increase in food supplies if the utilization of the various items used to maintain crops and livestock healthy.

This is good information Toney. In thinking about how the topic could be presented in the CXC English A exam, one idea which comes to mind is as a persuasive essay.

You could be asked to write a persuasive essay like this,
"Anticipated shortages in world food supplies are already causing rationing in some countries. As the prime minister of a Caribbean country, describe and defend what you would do to in this situation."
