Section B-The Home/Workplace

General objectives of the section:

Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of:

1.

the soil and the sea as two most important outdoor working environments in the Caribbean and that they are both natural resources as well as ecosystems
2.

the relationship between humans and the environment in which they work
3.

the need for appropriate physical conditions such as ventilation and sanitation in the home and the workplace
4.
the inter-conversion and conservation of the different forms of energy;
5.

the occurrence of accidents and hazardous situations and safety measures used in their prevention.

Unit II: WATER AND THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT

Specific Objectives

Students should be able to:
Explanatory notes
Suggested Practical Activities

1. Discuss the uses of water;

Role in life process, uses in home (consider wastage, prevention and conservation); drinking, fire fighting, generation of electricity.

2. Describe methods of purifying water

Sources of water; the treatment of seawater for domestic use.

Experiments to purify water by boiling, filtration, chlorination, distillation, and additives of alum.

3. Explain how the water cycle provides man with a continuous fresh supply of water

Construct a simple diagram of the water cycle

4. Discuss the chemical and physical properties of water

 Sea and fresh water; effects on metals and woods; effects of sea and fresh water on aquatic life.

Show the presence of dissolved air and solids by heating;
*Simple measurements of densities

Observe sinking and floating of similar materials in fresh and seawater.

5. Explain how fishes obtain oxygen from water

Surface area to volume ratio and blood supply of gill surface.

6. Describe the relationship between living organisms in the aquatic environment Consumers, producers, decomposers, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
7. Discuss the effects of water pollution on aquatic life Sources of pollution for example, nitrates, phosphates and various pesticides, oil spills

Investigate an aquatic habitat and construct a food chain/food web.

Visit field sites where there is evidence of water pollution.
8. Describe the various methods used locally for fishing Compare the various methods. Collect information from local fishermen and fisheries department.
9. Describe the various devices used to ensure safety at sea Compass as a device; how the magnetic compass works; safety standards set by Regional Boards

Magnetic attraction and repulsion should be demonstrated;

identify directions using a magnetic compass.
