CXC Integrated Science exam guide: TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND VENTILATION

CXC Integrated Science Exam Guide

Section B-The Home/Workplace

General objectives of the section:

Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of:

1.

the soil and the sea as two most important outdoor working environments in the Caribbean and that they are both natural resources as well as ecosystems

2.

the relationship between humans and the environment in which they work

3.

the need for appropriate physical conditions such as ventilation and sanitation in the home and the workplace

4.
the inter-conversion and conservation of the different forms of energy;
5.

the occurrence of accidents and hazardous situations and safety measures used in their prevention.

Unit I: TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND VENTILATION

Specific Objectives

Students should be able to:

Explanatory notes
Suggested Practical Activities

1. Describe the methods of heat transfer and their applications

Methods of heat transfer-conduction, convection, radiation.

Perform simple experiments to demonstrate the transfer of heat.

2.  Explain the principle by which thermostatically controlled household appliances operate

Thermostatic control-Electrical and gas ovens, electrical irons.

Demonstration to illustrate the principle using a bimetallic strip.

3. Describe the features of thermometers and the principles by which they work

The thermometer/temperature measurement-Types of thermometers e.g. clinical, laboratory, minimum/maximum thermometers, alcohol and mercury thermometers.

4. Explain the cooling effect of evaporation

Latent heat of vaporization, cooling effect of evaporation, relate to the work place; sweating and metabolic rate.

5. Discuss the effects of temperature and relative humidity on body functions

Wind temperature and humidity.

Conduct simple experiments to investigate the effects of wind, temperature and humidity of the area on evaporation and drying of materials.

6. Explain the need for proper ventilation

Effects of ventilation.

7.*describe how the air conditioner is used. The air conditioner; filtering, cooling and airflow treated simply. Identify features of buildings, which promote ventilation.
