CXC CSEC General Proficiency math topic:

COMPUTATION

CONTENT: Manipulation of real numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages; average, ratio, proportion, rates; squares adn square roots; use of tables and calculators; approximations and estimations.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: The student should be able to:

1.

Perform any of the basic operations with rational numbers, namely, whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

2.

Convert from one set of units to another, given a conversion scale;
(for example, convert local currencies to those currencies most commonly encountered in the Caribbean)

3.

Convert fractions and percentages to decimals and vice versa;

4.

Approximate a value to a given number of significant figures and express any decimal to a given number of decimal places;

5.

Write any rational number in standard form
(scientific notation)

6.

Calculate any fraction or percentage of a given quantity;

7.

Express one quantity as a fraction or percentage of another;

8.

Compare two quantities in a given ratio;

9.

Divide a given quantity in a given ratio;

10.

Solve problems involving:

(a) fractions

(b) decimals

(c) percentages

(d) ratio, rates and percentages

(e) squares and square roots

(f) averages
