CXC CSEC English A exam: Past paper type summary writing question 1

Here is a CXC CSEC past paper type summary writing question.

This is the type of summary writing question that has been on
CXC CSEC English A past papers

NB: CXC suggests spending no more than 40 minutes to answer the summary writing question in Section one, paper 2 of the English A exam.

Read carefully the following conversation between Ross and Susan and then answer the question below it.

Ross:
Susan Charles, a fine secretary you are! Don't you know that the students from Guadeloupe arrive on September 15th?

Susan:
Both the boys and the girls. So what else is new?

Ross: None of your wisecracks. That's only a month away and we haven't found accommodation for them as yet. The hotel says there won't be any room at that time. As secretary of the club, it's your responsibility...

Susan: I know, I know. I'll arrange for them to stay in private homes. I'm sure the villagers won't mind taking them in for a small charge. It's only for two weeks. Our visitors are booked to leave on the 30th.

Ross: Not a bad idea. Why don't you write to all the villagers asking them to write to us if they are interested in putting up these students? I wonder how much they'll charge.

Susan: I'll ask them to give their rates. We'll have to insist, though, that the villagers who are interested must be able to speak French. The Guadeloupans speak no English.

Ross: At least not the six who are coming. Should the villagers provide meals?

Susan: Breakfast and dinner, except on Sundays when they must include lunch as well.

Ross: I think we should let the villagers know that two club members will want to inspect homes and chat with the applicants before making the selection.

Susan: Agreed. Letters from those who are interested should reach us by August 26th. Then our members can visit on the 28th.

Ross: After six p.m., I suppose? Should the villagers write to you as secretary?

Susan:

Right on both counts; I'll tell them to write to:

The Secretary
Denby Sports Club
P.O. Box 63
Arroyo Village.

Ross: But suppose a villager can put up more than one student?

Susan: All the better, my friend, all the better.

Imagine that you are Susan. In not more than 150 words, write the letter to the villagers.

Marks will be given for (1) content, (2) organisation and (3) expression

30 marks

Hello,
I am seeking homes for 6 Guadeloupians, all hotels are presently full. I would like to ask if some of you villagers would be interested in looking after (feeding) a few of them (of course you'll get paid).

Guadeloupians speak no English, so you will need to be able to speak French for two weeks starting on the 15th and finishing on the 30th of September. There are 6 Guadeloupians coming; so if you want more than one person you'll have to be first to reply.

I will need the applications in by the 26th of august so we are able to come and view your house on the 28th after 6pm. Please could you also include the rates of pay.

Thank You
Susan Charles
Secretary

P.S: Please contact and send the applications to the address above.

I have used 148 words including address.

hey. i did english this year and trust me it's not my strongest subject ( thought i would have gotten a 3 but some how manage to obtain a 1 XD).
YOU NEED TO PRACTICE ENGLISH IN ORDER TO PASS JUST LIKE YOU WOULD WITH ANY OTHER SUBJECT.

I know this phrase is used so often but it is often the truth, " if i can get a 1 in english so can you". trust me even after cxc english is still not my best subject but i've gotten better at it and applied the following techinque
with other subjects ( with a few changes depending on the subject) and saw improvements. it just shows that hard work pays off.

Just take a few minutes out off your weekend and :

**pactice past paper questions ( either purchase or search for free ones online --->http://www.cxcpastpapers.com/
and check the cxc offical website for answers to them by looking at the exam results reports

**get tips, notes and practice quizzes from a local newspaper like the youthlink ( they have a online website if your unable to obtain 1 --> http://www.youthlinkjamaica.com/ )

**read as much as your able to( reading builds your vocabulary and helps with your creativity in writing your stories).

** ask your teacher if she can give you past papers, extra help or look at some of the work you have done on your own.

** if you think you need extra help and attention your teacher cant give you, then simply enroll in a class. classes are very helpful and sometimes it helps to re-enforce what you learnt in school.

Not to ramble, but i remember coming on this website and reading the notes and doing some of the practice exercises and practicing past paper questions.

Good luck with you exams =)

Hey this is my 5th time doing English and i Keep on ending up with the same grade the last 2 times.i don't knw what else to do i've done all i can.i feel frustrated at times. so maybe you can help me understand what i'm doing wrong

Hey Guess i'm kerry-Ann, the first step to passing your english is to not view it as hard or difficult.
Put your mind to it and try to sink yourself into it.
Revise daily, Speak properly daily(cut out slang from your speech) and go to your classes or extra lessons etc and pray. You will pass!!! Dont worry and Dont forget to pray to JAH!!! ok honey:-)
