(1) An electricity meter reading changes from 023.456 to 024.664. The first 100 units cost 0.15 cents per unit and the remaining unit cost 0.10 cents per unit. Calculate the total amount to be paid for energy charges.

(2) The charges on a telephone bill for August 1997 include a monthly rental fee of $30 which covers the charge of 30 local calls. A charge of 0.25 cents per call is made for each local call in excess of 30 calls. The number of calls made in August was $210 and the charges for overseas calls were 284.60. A tax of 50% is payable on overseas calls. Calculate

(a) The amount due for local calls
(b) the tax on overseas calls
(c) the total amount of the telephone bill

Electricity
Ending reading minus initial reading = 24664 - 23456 = 1208 Energy units
Cost for ist 100 units = 100 x 0.15 = $15
Cost for other units ( 1208 - 100) x 0.1 = 1108 x 0.1 = $110.80
Total cost = $110.8 = $15 = $125.80

Telephone
Cost of 30 local calls = $30
Total local calls made = 210
Local Calls in excess of 30 =(210-30) = 190
Cost of additional local calls = 190x 0.25 = $47.5
Total cost of local call = 30 + 47.5 = $77.50

Cost of overseas call = $284.60
Tax on overseas calls = 284.60 x 50% = $142.30
Cost of overseas calls including Tax = $284.60 + 142.3 = $426.90

Telephone bill = $Local calls + $ overseas call = $77.5 + $426.9 = $504.40
