ALGEBRA

These are the specific learning objectives that CXC has set for this CSEC math topic

CONTENT:

Symbolic representations; directed numbers; algebraic fractions, factorization; equations; inequalities and their graphs, simultaneous equations, formulae, indices. Linear inequalities: solution of quadratic equations; transformation of algebraic expressions, equations, formulae and identities; direct variation and inverse variation; set builder notation for expressing the solution set of equations.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: The student should be able to:

1.

Use symbols to represent numbers, operations, variables, and relations;

2.

Perform the four basic operations with algebraic expressions;

3.

Perform operations involving directed numbers (integers);

4.

Substitute numbers for algebraic symbols in simple algebraic expressions;

5.

Translate verbal phrases into algebraic symbols and vice versa;

6.

Use symbols to represent binary operations (other than the four basic ones) and perform simple computations with them;

7.

Apply the distributive law to insert or remove brackets in algebraic expressions, for example, ax ± bx = (a ± b)x;

8.

Simplify algebraic fractions;

9.

Use the laws of indices to manipulate expressions with integral indices;

10.

Solve linear equations in one unknown;

11.

Solve simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns algebraically;

12.

Solve a simple linear inequality in one unknown;

13.

Use linear equations to solve word problems;

14.

Use sumultaneous equations to solve word problems;

15.

Use investigations to make inferences and generalizations utilizing the concepts listed above.

16.

Factorize expressions of the forms:

a2 - b2, a2 + 2ab + b2, ax + bx +ay + by;

ax2 + bx + c where a, b, c are integers;

17.

Recognize the difference between those algebraic statements that represent equations and those that represent identitites;

18.

Use linear inequalities to solve word problems.

19.

Solve quadratic equations by:

(a) factorization

(b) using the quadratic formulae;

Solve quadratic equations by completing the square;

21.

Solve problems involving quadratic equations;

*22.

Solve a pair of equations in two variables when one equation is quadratic or non-linear and the other is linear;

23.

Change the subject of formulae including those involving roots and powers;

24.

Manipulate algebraic expressions involving rational indices;

25.

Prove two algebraic expressions to be identically equal;

26.

Represent direct and inverse variations symbolically;

27.

Perform calculations involving direct variation and inverse variation.
