Unit II: Food and Nutrition |
Specific Objectives
Students should be able to: |
Explanatory notes
Suggested Practical Activities
1. Describe the process of photosynthesis
Definition, identification of substrate, conditions and products; word and chemical equations;
outline of process; importance of light, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide and awareness that light energy can be converted to chemical energy.
Experiments to establish conditions for photosynthesis, food test, tests for starch as a product of photosynthesis. |
2. Discuss balanced and unbalanced diets
Wisdom in food selection; read labels to discern nutritive content; discuss food additives and their effects on health; the six food groups, their sources and functions of their main nutrients; balanced diet related to age, sex, occupation; deficiency diseases (PEM).
Experiments to measure energy value of food.
3. Explain the process of digestion in man
Physical and chemical digestion; necessity, role of enzymes; stages with enzymes, substrates and products; absorption. |
Draw and label the digestive system of man and state the function of each part;
* identify enzymes, digestive juices and state of acidity/ alkalinity at each stage; experiments on enzymes to show effects of temperature and pH; demonstrate the diffusion of small molecules using a partially permeable membrane; use glucose solution and starch solution.
4. Explain the role of teeth in digestion.
Relationship between structure and function; care of teeth; effect of fluoridation.
Draw and label a diagram of a vertical section of a tooth; examine models of individual teeth. |
