Guyana: New five-month project to improve CXC CSEC math and English results

New Education Minister Priya Manickchand has introduced a five-month pilot project in 32 secondary schools throughout the country that aims to improve Mathematics and English performance by 20 percent.

The Ministry will be ensuring that the students targeted get all the required resources which include, for Maths, CXC General Math 1 & 2, self study guides for CXC, a collection of revision DVDs, combined past papers from 2008 to 2011, model solutions to difficult answers, a geometry set, graph paper and scientific calculator, each.

The package for English A includes a collection of past papers, a dictionary, and combined solutions and in specific schools assistance will also be given for English B (Literature). Meanwhile, each teacher will receive a copy of the subject syllabus and a similar package to what the students will have.

The Education Minister, Priya Manickchand pointed out that in addition toexamination pass papers with solutions, revision text books, scientific calculators, geometry sets, and graph paper, Grade 11 students in the selected schools will be provided with and intense extra lessons after school.

The Education Minister has long recognised that students’ performance particularly in Maths and English A has been of concern, nevertheless,the ministry stepped up to the challenge by implementing several initiatives aimed at improving performance; they include the special training for Maths and English teachers via the Non-Graduate programme, workshops with subject specialists, strengthening the Maths programme at the Cyril Potter College of Education, and the institutionalization of the remediation programme.

This is a good idea that Guyana has. Why don't the other Caribbean countries try to do something extra to help the children as well?

this is indeed a great plan they have implemented towards boosting to better grades for maths & english!!! i do hope that it works.....because i am from one of the 32 schools benefitting...that is Cummings Lodge Secondary.

i think Guyana needs a school for adults, so that everyone can get access to free education..its really sad that some people are willing to study but because of lack of finance ..they can't..i hope the minister of education can do something about this.
