Inter-American short story and lesson plan contest: Perspectives on Democracy
On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Democracy, September 15, the Inter-American Program on Education for Democratic Values and Practices of the Organization of American States launches the “The Inter- American Contest on Perspectives on Democracy”.
The contest aims to learn about current views on democracy, from the perspectives of children and youth, and to discover successful strategies and methods for teaching democratic values.
The contest is organized into two categories:
(1) Short stories created by children and youth (primary and secondary school students between the ages of 10 and 17 years)
Short story: A story of maximum 2 pages responding to the following question:
What do you understand by democracy and how do you live it?
Primary and secondary school students between the ages of 10 and 17 are eligible to participate. The short story may be written in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.
(2) Lesson plans formulated by primary or secondary classroom teachers who are currently teaching in educational institutions in OAS member states.
Lesson Plans: A lesson plan to teach the meaning of democracy in school classrooms aimed at teachers of primary and/or secondary schools. The lesson plans can be written in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish. A lesson is a guide designed by the teacher that includes the objectives, activities and other appropriate aspects for teaching a specific topic.
Entry requirements:
- Be resident/citizen of one of the OAS member states (to see list of member states click here).

If you are a boy, girl or young person:
- Be 10-17 years old.
- Be enrolled in primary or secondary school.
- The short story must be personal and unpublished and not infringe any author’s rights.

If you are a teacher:
- Be a teacher in a primary or secondary level school.
- The lesson plan must be personal and unpublished and not infringe any author’s rights.
- Complete and send the form by the established deadline.
- Read and meet the requirements of this call.

Entry deadline: Wednesday October 31, 2012.
Prizes: The winners from each category will be announced on November 12, 2012. The ten best short stories and ten best lesson plans will be included in a virtual publication that the OAS intends to distribute through its networks to the entire hemisphere.
The ten students whose work is selected will each receive a certificate of recognition from the OAS.
The ten teachers whose work is selected will receive a certificate of recognition from the OAS.
Schools
The school with the highest number of participating students and/or teachers will receive an award from the OAS in recognition of their work towards strengthening a democratic culture in the Americas.
schools from which one or more of the 10 selected students and/or teachers come, will also receive an award of recognition.
