The reading comprehension questions on paper 1 and paper 2 of the CXC CSEC English A exam usually includes some questions on a poem or poems.

In order to correctly answer these questions, you will need to become familiar with the purpose, forms and meaning of poetry.

Here is an introduction to the world of poetry.

For poetry to have meaning for us, to resonate with us, we also need to connect with the message and the language of poetry.

To illustrate, here are examples of Caribbean poetry:

"Colonization in reverse" - Louise Bennett (Jamaica)

"Love after love" Derek Walcott (St Lucia)

"From Kumina" Edward Kamau Brathwaite (Barbados)

"The Banana man"

"If I woz a tap natch poet" by Linton Kwesi Johnson
