Why write persuasive (argumentative) essays?

What is persuasive (argumentative) writing and why do it?

Persuasive writing is when you, the writer, are trying to get the reader to agree with your point of view about a topic. 

There are several instances in ordinary life when being able to write persuasively is helpful.

Being able to write persuasive essays is useful for writing:

Letters to the editor  Image
 Image Letters of complaint to utility companies for overcharging you.
Writing speeches or letters for community organizations/groups, buyers or voters  Image
 Image University/ College essay assignments
